Starchild
an ARTISTIC PROJECT between HUMANITY AND THE STARS
IMMERSIVE PHOTO PORTRAITS

Starchild is a project combining art and science conceived by Enrico Magnani in 2022, a visual exploration that investigates the ancestral link between man and the cosmos.
Through the video projection of works from the “Supernova” painting series, Enrico Magnani envelops the human body and transforms it into a medium suspended between figure and cosmos. The result is a kaleidoscope of light and color, in which the subject merges with the stellar event, becoming an integral part of it. Starchild stems from a scientific and poetic premise: we are, literally, stardust. The elements that make up life as we know it—carbon, oxygen, iron, etc.—are the product of ancient supernova explosions, cosmic events that made our existence possible.
THE ARCHETYPE OF THE GREAT MOTHER
In this project, the supernova becomes a maternal archetype, a cosmic entity that ideally embraces its offspring through the projected light.
WHERE MACRO AND MICROCOSM MEET
Magnani builds a dialogue between art and science, between corporeality and infinity, challenging the viewer—who becomes the protagonist—to recognize themselves as part of a larger whole. The aesthetically hypnotic works transcend simple contemplation to become visual metaphors: an invitation to reflect on the interconnection between microcosm and macrocosm, between biology and astrophysics. Beyond its formal appeal, Starchild is an act of awareness: a tribute to the wonder of the universe and our role in it, ephemeral and extraordinary at the same time. The work introduces a circular perspective: the stars created us, and we, made of their matter, look at them. It is the universe contemplating itself. The images become fragments of a broader discourse, where art and science merge, giving rise to an important question: what does it mean to be children of the stars?

THE SUBJECT BLENDS WITH THE ARTIST'S WORK, BECOMING A NEW WORK OF ART
Starchild transforms the portrait into a meta-work of art: the subject, enveloped in projections from the “Supernova” series—animated using generative artificial intelligence—is not simply depicted, but merges with the work itself, becoming a new artistic creation (subject + work). Through this symbiosis, the artist draws a visual bridge between the human and the cosmic, reminding us that our bodies are composed of the same elements generated in the spectacular stellar explosions called supernovas. The portrait thus conceived transcends representation to become a celebration of a common cosmic origin.

THE ETERNAL PRESENT: THE SUSPENSION OF COSMIC TIME
Starchild, in its deepest essence, is also an experiment in suspended temporality. The cosmic projections that envelop the subject not only transform its physical presence, but seem to dilate the moment itself, creating a limbo between past and future. The images of supernovae, portrayed in the instant of their ephemeral splendor, overlap with the human in a dialogue that nullifies the distance between the fleeting moment and eternity.
In this fusion, the viewer/protagonist is invited to perceive themselves as a bridge between measurable time and cosmic time, where what is already dead (the light of extinct stars) continues to live in our flesh and in our gaze. The work thus becomes a monument to the paradox of existence: fragile and transitory, yet laden with the legacy of an endless universe.
